With people asked to stay safe at home during the pandemic, gardening has become a favourite activity. It not only keeps you physically fit, but it will calm you too. If you nurture your gardens, it will nurture you with fresh fruits, veggies and fragrant flowers.
Here are some of the things you can do this winter season:
1. Weeding:
Pull out the weeds with root and all. Dig over the soil and add compost, blood & bone, manure and/or lime to revitalise it.
2. Plant out seedlings:
Choose your favourites herbs and leafy greens (e.g. beetroot, spinach, lettuce, onion, garlic etc) and start growing. Thin them out as soon as they come up by keeping the stronger ones.
3. Plant out bare-rooted trees and roses:
Now is the time to buy your bare-rooted trees and roses from your local or online nursery. Prepare the plant hole with compost. Put the sawdust from the bag in the compost heap. Trim off the ends of the roots if they look damaged.
4. Prune deciduous trees and roses:
Wintertime allows you to take a good look at their structure. The DDD rule applies; remove all Dead, Damaged and Diseased wood. Take away the (weaker) branches that (will) cross with the stronger ones.
